A warm spacious family home, which still showed a touching and important connection to the family that own it as well. The location can't be better for access to castle douglas's main centre. The house and garden are beautiful. From the upstairs windows you can see the nearby carlinwark loch with an attractive formation of hills as a backdrop.
Tips for other travellers
Definitely shop local and support the local economy (only go to Tesco's if you really need to) everything you need is on the Main Street at castle doulas or near to it, bakers, butchers, coffee house, take out or sit in restaurants and a real mix of independent shops for nice presents.
Highly recommend:
Moored fish and chips - delicious
The earths crust bakery - fabulous breads
Everyone is friendly and welcoming.
Butchers - tasty award winning pies and pasties
Must see: threave gardens, less than a mile away and threave castle 2 miles away, you can't access the castle at the moment but the views from the path over the river dee are spectacular and the walk to it is lovely in itself.
Sandy hills beach is very nice (careful of the tide) and rockcliffe is a good stop for a look at interesting small rock formations.

Great location on the edge of Castle Douglas, with a short walk to the local shops and restaurants. A very well kept house with a lovely garden that our dog thoroughly enjoyed! It was a relaxing place to take a break with parking right outside the front door. It was also quiet and you wouldn’t know you had neighbours.
Tips for other travellers
Restaurants - we enjoyed Nikos (Greek), Moore’s (Chippy!), Jewel in the Crown (Indian), plus a selection of the local delis. I can also recommend the local brewery (Sulwath), for a pint or 2, plus a few bottles to enjoy at home. The Earths Crust bakery (just along the same road as the cottage), makes lovely bread, but the opening hours are a little erratic.
We also took a trip to the beach at Southerness and had a good pub meal at the Paul Jones.

A wonderful home for a family break, lots of space for everyone. The kitchen is great if you like to cook. There is a stunning loch which is literally round the corner and the main town is a 2 minute walk with all the shops you need. Plus a larger Tesco at the top of the town.
Tips for other travellers
The custard slices sold at the bakers in the town (the grey one) are some of the best we have ever tasted. Be sure to go down to the shell beach at Kippford my children loved it more than a traditional beach!

We had a fantastic 2 week stay at Rusko house. Great communication re changes due to COVID-19 which we fully respected and appreciated. The house really felt like home from home and it was so lovely to come back to at the end of a busy day! The area is so beautiful for walking, adventure and beautiful quiet beaches. We were super lucky with the weather to be able to make the most of our stay. Thank you!
Tips for other travellers
Brilliant to have Tesco and Co-Op on our doorstep, lovely local shops to explore for the kids to spend holiday money. We loved Carrick Bay but get there early for parking. We also enjoyed the zipwire at Laggan Outdoor, chocolate making at the Cocoabean factory and the kids loved their go kart experience at Cream O Galloway! (Gorgeous ice-cream too) Forest of Galloway was awesome for walks. Just a beautiful area with so much to explore, enjoy!
